In the past two weeks, I have been to Masstown Market four times. Yes, four. I really can’t get enough of the fresh, local produce, home-style cooking, the bakery (best blueberry scones in the province!) and wide selection of local meats and cheeses (Pork Shop, Meadowbrook Meat Market and Fox Hill Cheese House to name just a few). In addition, their new fish market makes it a must-stop anytime I am within 20 minutes of Masstown, Nova Scotia. Read more »

We couldn’t think of a more ideal setting for dinner on a crisp early spring evening than the cozy dining room of an historic inn in downtown Halifax. That’s what we found at Stories Casual Fine Dining at the Halliburton.
Stories boasts of fine dining in a casual setting and that is what it delivered in spades. The atmosphere was complimented by fantastic service. Our waiter, Neil, expertly enhanced the atmosphere by providing us with great tips on wine, menu recommendations and tidbits of information about the many local selections available. Read more »

Since I was a young boy, I have been plagued by an undiagnosed medical condition known as ridiculouspunitis. This is a rare condition characterized by the uncontrollable use of puns. Last week, upon pulling into the parking lot of the Meadowbrook Meat Market, I was delighted to discover a fellow sufferer of this condition. We are few and far between. The presentation was obvious: use of ridiculous pork-related puns to individually label porking parking spaces. To be honest, I never sausage saw such a creative collection of signs. Beer, BBQs and Growlers

I have a confession to make: I do not like the winter. I’ve tried. Despite giving snowboarding, speed skating, and polar bear dipping honest attempts, when the snow falls, I can’t help but daydream about warmer days – hopping on my road bike and cruising around the province, or firing up the BBQ with a nice cold beer.
So, this past weekend, when the temperature shot up to a balmy 9 degrees in Halifax, it was time to embrace the arrival of spring by firing up the grill. I decided to make my way to Propeller Brewery store, affectionately known as the “Prop Shop” to purchase necessary weekend supplies. My mission: to find the perfect marinade ingredient. Read more »
